Nestlé has developed a new coffee variety called Star 4, designed to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from coffee farming. This high-yielding Arabica variety features larger beans and resistance to coffee rust, a significant crop threat. These traits ensure higher yields and greater resilience, helping maintain coffee supply despite the challenges posed by climate change.
The new variety is part of Nestlé’s broader efforts to create sustainable coffee farming practices. The company has also launched the Nescafé Plan 2030, investing over 1 billion Swiss Francs to support farmers in transitioning to regenerative agriculture. This plan aims to reduce environmental impact and enhance the livelihoods of coffee farmers.
Climate change is expected to significantly reduce the areas suitable for coffee growing by 2050. Nestlé’s initiatives, including the Regenerative Agriculture Framework, aim to mitigate these impacts and help the company reach its 2050 net zero climate goal.
