ABB Strengthens Wind Energy Portfolio Through Strategic Partnership with Clean Energy Startup

ABB, a leading provider of wind converters, is taking a significant step towards expanding its wind energy capabilities by investing in a strategic partnership with WindESCo, a prominent analytics software company specializing in wind turbine performance enhancement. ABB Motion, a subsidiary of ABB, has acquired a minority stake in WindESCo through its venture capital unit, ABB Technology Ventures (ATV).

WindESCo, headquartered in the United States, offers advanced analytics solutions that boost wind turbine efficiency and reliability. This investment aligns with ABB’s commitment to promoting a low carbon society and strengthening its position in renewable power generation. It enables ABB to continuously improve wind turbine performance, offer comprehensive solutions to wind energy customers, and enter the digital market channel.

The partnership merges ABB’s expertise in electrical systems with WindESCo’s software solutions, enabling them to provide an integrated approach to customers. ABB‘s President of System Drives division, Chris Poynter, expressed excitement about this venture, emphasizing its contribution to the energy transition and expanding ABB’s renewable solutions.

WindESCo’s CEO, Mo Dua, highlighted the significance of addressing the electrical system’s performance in wind turbines. With ABB’s equity investment and collaboration, WindESCo aims to lead in comprehensive asset performance monitoring for the wind industry.

This partnership enriches ABB’s ecosystem of innovation partners, promoting decarbonization and energy efficiency. ABB has invested approximately $400 million in ventures aligned with its electrification and automation portfolio since 2009.
