Switzerland Takes Step Towards Sustainable Chemicals Management at International Conference

The fifth International Conference on Chemicals Management is scheduled to be held in Bonn, Germany, from 25th to 29th September 2023. The conference aims to establish a framework for sustainable management of chemicals and waste. Recently, the Federal Council of Switzerland approved the negotiating mandate for the Swiss delegation, highlighting the country’s commitment to addressing climate and sustainability challenges.

During this important conference, participating nations will work towards replacing the current Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) with a new instrument. Switzerland’s delegation will actively engage in setting a framework that ensures a substantial reduction in the negative impact of chemicals and waste. It emphasizes the importance of involving all relevant stakeholders and sectors in achieving this goal. Ambitious actions are required to tackle the significant challenges posed by the management of chemicals and waste effectively.

Switzerland is well-known for its robust and progressive legislation on chemicals and waste management. The country already meets most of the requirements outlined by the new instrument intended to replace SAICM.
