Metafuels and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) have received a grant of 4.4 million Swiss francs from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy to build a pilot plant for making sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF). This plant will use aerobrew technology developed by Metafuels and PSI.
The pilot plant will be located at the PSI campus in Villigen, Aargau, Switzerland. This project aims to produce e-SAF from renewable energy sources. The partners will use green methanol and CO2 from the atmosphere or biogenic sources to create the fuel. This will be the first plant of its kind in Switzerland.
The grant from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy was awarded due to the project’s innovation and alignment with the Energy Strategy 2050 goals. Aerobrew e-SAF can replace conventional aviation fuel for all aircraft types. Metafuels claims that aerobrew technology aims for low production costs through high efficiency and a high e-SAF yield.
The technology is expected to cut life cycle emissions by up to 90 percent and does not impact food and feed supplies. Metafuels’ CEO highlighted the grant’s importance in advancing their technology and supporting Switzerland’s innovative economy.
