BKW, a Swiss energy utility, has entered a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with OWP Butendiek, an offshore wind farm located in northern Germany. Starting in July 2024, BKW will procure approximately 200 gigawatt hours of green electricity annually from the wind farm, situated in the North Sea off Germany. This quantity represents 18% of the wind farm’s total production, purchased at a fixed price each year. The agreement, signed on December 18, 2023, marks BKW’s entry into the offshore wind market and significantly enhances its renewable energy portfolio, providing customers with clean electricity.

The Butendiek offshore wind farm, operational since 2015, boasts an output of around 288 megawatts. It’s owned by a consortium of several financial and industrial energy companies. This PPA supports the investment security of renewable energy producers and facilitates the financing of new green energy projects. Amanda Niklaus, Head of Renewables PPA Origination at BKW, expressed satisfaction with the agreement, highlighting its role in developing BKW’s energy portfolio and its importance in the PPA market. Björn Nullmeyer, Butendiek’s Director, echoed these sentiments, appreciating the long-term investment and planning security the PPA provides.

The PPA is part of BKW’s ongoing commitment to expanding its renewable energy sources, having concluded several agreements in the past year, including those with German solar farm developers Greenovative and MaxSolar. This PPA strengthens BKW’s position in the renewable energy sector and contributes to a more sustainable energy future
