Tetra Pak recently launched its “Approach to Nature” initiative, aiming to reverse nature loss and improve water security. This announcement comes just before the UN’s International Day of Biodiversity. The plan is aligned with the Biodiversity Plan’s global targets, focusing on protecting biodiversity and fostering a healthier natural environment.

The initiative addresses the significant environmental damage caused by global food systems, as highlighted in a report by the IPBES. These systems impact economies, livelihoods, and food security. Tetra Pak’s approach involves a detailed analysis of their environmental impact across their business chain, aiming to manage and mitigate negative effects on nature and support ecosystem restoration.

Key aspects of the plan include enhancing water security by reducing impacts on local water sources and tackling water issues in vulnerable regions. The company has set ambitious goals, such as sourcing all critical raw materials from certified sources by 2025, making all high water-use suppliers report their water usage by the same year, achieving zero waste-to-landfill at their production sites by 2030, and cutting water usage in efficient processing lines by 50% by 2030.

Gilles Tisserand, Vice President of Climate & Biodiversity at Tetra Pak, emphasized the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship, building on achievements like their continuous recognition in the CDP Forests A List and recent ratings in Water Security.

Additionally, Tetra Pak supported the Business for Nature coalition’s statement at COP15, advocating for businesses and financial institutions to assess and disclose their biodiversity impacts and promote sustainable practices among consumers.
