In the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, a groundbreaking initiative is transforming a roadside retaining wall into a sustainable solar energy source. The region is committed to sourcing 40% of its electricity from renewables by 2035, and Solarmotion, a leading Swiss company in sustainable energy, is playing a pivotal role in this effort.

Teaming up with German innovator K2 Systems, Solarmotion has creatively adorned the cantonal retaining wall with 756 glass-glass solar panels, generating an impressive 325 kW of energy annually. This solar endeavor aligns seamlessly with the canton’s goal of achieving 40% renewable energy by 2035, marking a significant step towards a greener future.

Managed by St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke, the solar energy seamlessly integrates into the grid, powering the equivalent of 52 Swiss households each year. The canton, in return, benefits from a feed-in tariff, showcasing the tangible rewards of this innovative and sustainable collaboration.
