Barry Callebaut, a leading signatory of the Cocoa and Forest Initiative (CFI), is dedicated to finding a lasting solution for deforestation in the cocoa supply chain. They have developed a new action plan, CFI 2.0 (2023-2025), which aims to unite public and private stakeholders in ending cocoa-related deforestation. Working alongside organizations like IDH and the World Cocoa Foundation, as well as the governments of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, Barry Callebaut strives to achieve their CFI and Forever Chocolate targets and create a forest-positive future.
Their sustainability efforts focus on various initiatives. They have implemented an intensified agroforestry approach, offering training, extended monitoring, and payment for ecosystem services. They have also scaled up on- and off-farm restoration by distributing seedlings and native trees. To address farmer poverty, Barry Callebaut’s Farm Services business supports farmers with subsidized soil inputs and paid labor teams, improving productivity without expanding into forests. They have also improved their deforestation alert system.
The CFI 2.0 Action Plan outlines their activities for the next few years. It emphasizes scaling up their Agroforestry Program, raising awareness about forest conservation, and supporting farmer communities through financial and technical assistance. They are also designing programs for collective action and deforestation monitoring.
